It’s an interesting point, Jacqui. Obviously the artist has to feel comfortable with the way she/he signs an artwork, and of course there is no compulsion to append one’s signature at all, but from the art historical point of view, I would say that unsigned works can lead to questions of attribution which may never be satisfactorily resolved. So perhaps one owes it to future generations of art lovers … ?!
And of course a signature is important for collectors too!
Yes true. I think it is a good job that Picasso didn’t change his signature as many times as me!
I have this issue with every painting Jacqui… Settled with JA for now, on the ones I do sign that is… I agree, signatures get in the way! Best of luck with your upcoming exhibition!

I never sign the front of a painting as it interferes with the drawn composition and the colour of any one area of the work. I sign the back. But I do really like the work of others where the signature becomes part of the composition or a drawing element. I.e. Jen Dixon, Robert Ryman.
